for type 1's unfornutely medications are the only way to survive. without any insulin whatsoever the body can survive very little time and if you just dont eat carbs or sugar...the body will still go into DKA and the diabetic will eventually die. i'm not sure of the actual "time" it takes for the body to give out...but i'm assuming it would be less than a month. lots of charity foundations and catholic health services...or even a Mission of Hope and can help you get medications with no charge if you are worried about the money. and you can get insulin for less than $25 at your local walmart pharmacy (the generic brand works just as well as the Humalin brand) and you can buy it over the counter with no prescriptions. dont let yourself get in bad shape on the worry of not having the meds...there are lots of people out there who get their medications with no charge to them. diabetes can kill very quickly if not treated....my sugar gets high after no insulin one day so i know i would be a gonner within a week or two without it.
