Before being diagnosed, both types 1 and 2 diabetes can actually cause severe weight loss in many people. However, type 2 can sometimes cause some people to gain some weight. Normally, most people lose weight when they have undiagnosed diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, many people lose weight, but some stay at their normal weight. Weight loss is not a symptom in all type 1 diabetics. Taking insulin can cause weight gain. The reason is...when you are an undiagnosed diabetic, the calories that your body is taking in are not being used. They are sort of flushed from the body. The body uses its stored fat supply for energy. When you start to take insulin, it helps the body use the calories it takes in, and can actually have a "reserve" of fat now since the body is no longer using it. Many type 1 diabetics gain weight when they start taking insulin. The ones that eat more carbs than they should and then take more insulin to compensate, can actually gain even more weight. So, it is important to watch your diet, limit the carbs, and only use the insulin that you really need. All diabetics need to watch their diets.
