The correct spelling is Moersh-Woltman Syndrome, also known as Stiff-Person Syndrome. As far as how long a person can live with this, I was unable to find any info. It would depend on if you were diagnosed early and the severity of your symptoms. This is a treatable syndrome. Women are frequently affected. It begins with spasms & stiffness, which initially flucuate. But, eventually becomes constant & more prominent in the body trunk( the abdominal & chest areas of the body ) and a decrease in the extremity muscles( arms, legs). The muscle spasms can be painful & the person may experience difficulty in walking. There is difficulty turning or bending @ the waist. Inability to relax. You can experience sudden, episodic spasms which, may be painful & are triggered by unexpected stimuli IE: sudden movement, sudden nosies, emotional upset, fear of open spaces ( to name a few triggers). It is often associated with other autoimmune disorders, Diabetes, Thyroid problems. Seizures can occur in 5% of people with this syndrome. Many patients' have more stiffness in one limb ( arm, leg). This is a treatable syndrome. There are several medications that are prescribed to ease the symptoms. Valium ( muscle-relaxant) is the drug of choice but, the side effects often interfere with everyday living. Other medications: Sedative-anxioytics : Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin. Baclofen, Neurontin, Steroids, even Botox can help. Steroids are usually the most prescibed medication. It is my hope that you are being monitored and under the care of a MD who is familiar with this syndrome. Since I do not the severity of your condition, it's best that you ask your Doc. I hope that this has helped some. Good Luck.
