Listen, if you suspect you have Diabetes, make an appointment with an Endocrinologist or an Internist.

You say you get up frequently at night to urinate — are you going more frequently during the day also? In addition, do you find you are constantly thirsty? Those 2 symptoms are the most noticeable you will have, and they are signs a person may have Diabetes.

Yes, you can go to a pharmacy and buy a glucose meter, without a prescription. I use Accu-Chek Compact. It is a bit more expensive, but that's because you can buy cartridges (that hold a bunch of test strips) that drop right into the meter. If you buy a cheaper meter, you will have to buy loose test strips; and each time you test yourself, you have to get a strip & stick it into the meter before you start. I find Accu-Chek way more convenient, especially if I have to test outdoors.

Before I say anything else, let me tell you that it is very simple to find out if you do or do not have Diabetes. There are 2 tests, that can be done on the same day, that will determine if you have Diabetes.

You go to the doctor, after fasting since midnight before. First they will draw blood to do what is called a hemoglobin A1c test (or simply called an A1c test). This tells them how your glucose levels have been for the past 3 months. People who are non-diabetics will have a result of less than 6%. (Actually, this hemoglobin A1c test alone can diagnose Diabetes; and your Internist can do it.)
