Was going to say diabetes would be the only bad effect, but saw you finished with that comment. Nothing truly wrong, though excess sugar consumption sometimes causes you to be ill and a bigger hangover. Salty things just naturally go better with alcohol, that's why you see bars serve nuts, chips, popcorn, etc. Personal preference, I say...nothing particularly bad or good about eating sweets. It won't hurt you.
