It sounds like he got a complication from his diabetes that is common if someone has poor control of diabetes, a toe/foot infection. Basically he got an infection so bad that it has invaded his blood stream and bone marrow. The infection came from bacteria, not a virus like AIDS. All the doctors can do is keep fighting the infection and hope that he responds to the antibiotics. I would not suggest having sex with him until he is clear of infection. You probably won't catch anything but his immune system is not doing well and if you had a small cold, he could get it and end up with pneumonia or something. His infection came from his body's inability to fight off a bacteria, it should not be catchy to you.

You may want to learn more about what diabetes is and how it is treated if you are going to keep seeing him. Check out www.diabetes.org to learn more about it. Ask him if he is type I or type II so you can learn about which kind he has.
